Praise & Reviews
“Lisa Porter has opened a clinic – Sensory Kids – that has been truly transformative. She and her staff demonstrate excellence in a number of ways: 1) everyone provides clear communications on scientific concepts in ways a parent can understand; 2) the front staff is courteous and accommodating to my needs; and 3) the thoughtfulness in approaching my child and his unique needs has led to a significant transformation in how he is in this world. Not only have the sensory issues been addressed, but his esteem and confidence have blossomed. Lisa is dedicated to helping everyone thrive and has built a practice and team to carry forward her commitment.”

“We had the incredible fortune of finding Sensory Kids when we first moved to Portland from Los Angeles at the end of last summer. From the moment we walked in with our two kids (ages 8 and 10), we were warmly greeted and well taken care of; the staff does so much behind the scenes to make sure that all issues, from family support to scheduling to insurance questions, are addressed and taken care of.
The therapeutic style provided by Sensory Kids does not promise any quick fixes, nor does it adhere to any strict rules or traditional behavioral models; they treat each and every child as a whole, lovable person, carefully following the child’s lead and learning as much as possible about the child’s interests. This makes it possible to tap into the child’s intrinsic motivation to get these little guys and gals up and using their bodies. For our kids, OT has been the most helpful of all therapies, and at Sensory Kids the team is so great at making sessions playful and fun, yet doing so in an organized fashion that allows the child to make goals and reach milestones.
We have been on this road of autism therapy for eight years now, and after visiting countless clinics both in Oregon and California, it is my sincere and humble opinion that the love and care we received at Sensory Kids is truly unparalleled.”

“I am so appreciative of the work our son was able to do at Sensory Kids with Emily, his OT! Emily impressed me right away with her ability to intuit quickly how to approach our reserved and hesitant child. She was warm, genuine, and inviting (but not pushy) and she let things unfold at his pace. It was a total delight to encounter someone who trusted our child’s process rather than immediately trying to impose their own; as a result not only did my son warm up and feel safe with Emily right away, but as a parent I was reminded to value and respect his process as well. Emily brought an energetic and playful openness to each session and always had innovative and fun activities up her sleeve, as well as excellent practical insights and suggestions to share with us as parents. Most significantly for us, the sessions never had anything akin to a clinical feel- this was play, pure and simple, and our child felt liked and appreciated for who he was.
We came to Sensory Kids ostensibly to get some support for our child, who was struggling with social anxiety and some out-of-sync behavior. Our son got so much out of his sessions, but it was really us as parents who made the biggest changes. Sensory Kids’ non-judgmental approach was a breath of fresh air in our worried parental hearts, and we saw our sweet boy with new eyes: much better informed about how to support him, and much more accepting and understanding. Our family is the better for it! Huge thank you’s to Emily & Sensory Kids!”

“Sensory Kids was an amazing experience for both me and my son. Jen was so incredible at giving us tools to help with self regulation in this world that is often hard to maneuver for those with sensory disorders. Jen quickly built a relationship with us as parents and our son and helped give us a safe place to land…a place to grow and be cared for in the midst of daily struggles. Sensory Kids was a place my son loved to come. He deemed Jen his ‘play teacher’ and didn’t even realize he was developing critical skills as he swung, leaped, and crashed through their wonderful gyms. I am grateful for the progress my son made and that he has the ability to move forward, but I will also miss our time at Sensory Kids. It was a learning place for us all! So blessed to have such an offering in Portland, and after having multiple Occupational Therapists, we would rate Jen among the BEST!!”
– Sophia, January 2013“After working with Jen at Sensory Kids for just a few sessions we started seeing that our seven year old son was more comfortable in his skin. One of Jen’s strengths is knowing where to meet Leo when introducing something new. When he is uncomfortable with an activity, she’s very good at reading him and pulling back to a place of comfort for him, then gradually building up to the place she was shooting for. This feels very respectful to me, and Leo trusts her because of it. He’s also very motivated to go to therapy because he has so much fun with her. She lets his imagination guide the session and builds his therapy around it. We feel very lucky to have found her.”

“Our daughter has done two intensives with Lisa Porter and each time the cognitive and behavioral shifts for our daughter have been profound. As our three-year-old played and had fun in therapy, her mind was being reshaped and given opportunities to make new connections. Her ability to deal with frustration, listen to her own body, and make friendships with other children has expanded to the point that she is able to now engage in group activities with other children, attend a community preschool, and is just more comfortable in her skin. With emerging frequency, she is modeling appropriate behavior and as parents we feel our stress level decreased and our joy and understanding of parenting for her needs increased. Finally, we are meeting the delightful child we always knew was behind the tantrums and frenetic behavior. What a difference Sensory Kids has made to our family!”

“Just before my family began working with Lisa Porter, I was struggling intensely with parenting our 3-year-old daughter. I didn’t know how to respond to behaviors my daughter was exhibiting, and I feared that I wasn’t a good mama to her–that somehow it was my fault that she was having such a difficult time. My partner and I were stressed and scared because we knew that something was going on with our kiddo. When we consulted with Lisa and had our daughter evaluated for sensory processing issues, we gained anextraordinary ally and a precious relationship with a fantastic practitioner. Lisa connects to our daughter with genuine compassion, joy, and dedication. She pushes gently to challenge her, while always respecting her emotions and clear limits. Our kiddo delightedly looks forward to her time with Lisa; my partner and I love have the opportunity to watch the two of them working together. Since we began occupational therapy with Lisa, my relationship to parenting has changed dramatically. Lisa has offered information and tools that allow me to support my daughter’s needs. Our kiddo has drastically increased her ability to manage intense emotions, adapt to new situations, and stretch her wings. I am so thankful to count Lisa among my family’s dearest support.”

“From the very first contact I had with Lisa, I felt listened to, respected and taken seriously. We scheduled an evaluation with Lisa for our daughter because we thought it was possible that she had some sensory processing difficulty. Lisa was very thoughtful and thorough in her evaluation. She listened carefully and attentively to our reports of the challenges and behavior we saw at home with our daughter. She offered empathy and understanding at every turn.”
Watching Lisa work with our daughter has been amazing. Our daughter connected with Lisa right away, which is rare. Lisa is creative, focused and encouraging. Our daughter has so much fun at Lisa’s office and the progress we have seen towards her therapy goals is unbelievable. Lisa also has been an incredible support for us as parents. SPD is new to us, and we have found a great ally in Lisa. She explains things clearly to us, is patient with our questions and we can tell she truly cares about our family and our daughter.
Working with Lisa throughout this year has been essential for our family. We feel grateful for the expertise Lisa brings to her work, as well as her compassionate nature.”
“Oh, Lisa Porter, O.T.- where to begin? She really cares about kids with SPD and their families and it truly shows. She is so caring and thoughtful and she really takes time to get to know what makes your child tick. My son with SPD took YogaCalm from her and she was empathic and patient every step of the way. She is quite an advocate for families with sensory challenges and has truly gone the extra mile to provide resources to keep us connected and simply feel like there is someone who undertsands! It is not possible for me to say all the wonderful things there are to say about Lisa. She is the best possible advocate for sensory kids, she makes the world a better place for kids and their families and I am so thankful for her!”
“Wow. Lisa Porter is truly a dedicated, educated and AMAZING OT. She is so knowledgeable about SPD and intuitive about how to not only work with children with sensory challenges but their families as well. She is patient, supportive and gentle. Her space is wonderful with the perfect amount of stimulation and appropriate tools. She is genuinely concerned and an excellent listener, a rare quality in many therapists today.
I would highly recommend seeing Lisa for OT if your child has any sensory concerns.”
