Live Online Q&A

Live Online Q&A hosted by Sensory KIDS

Sensory KIDS wants to take a moment to thank each and everyone one of you for your ongoing support and commitment during this difficult time. We have been working hard to provide you all with opportunities to stay connected and supported via online sessions.

We understand that this is a financially straining time for our community, so we are happy to announce that Sensory KIDS is hosting a FREE live, online Q&A with our director and owner, Lisa Porter, and our caregiver support group facilitator, Candy Trujillo. This Q&A will be directed towards caregivers of children with sensory difficulties. This is a great opportunity to receive support in an intimate group setting with other parents/guardians who may be going through similar experiences. Lisa will be answering your questions about sensory-related topics with a focus on using relationship-based strategies to support emotional regulation (in yourselves and others).

The live Q&A will be held over Zoom on the following date:

  • Thursday April 30th from 4:30pm – 6:00pm

Please register by completing the form at the bottom of this page. Registration will not be accepted via direct email.

Dr Miller is the founder of the first comprehensive Sensory Processing Disorder research program nationwide and author of groundbreaking Sensational Kids: Hope and Help for Children with Sensory Processing Disorder and No Longer A SECRET: Unique Common Sense Strategies for Children with Sensory or Motor Challenges. Dr. Lucy Jane Miller’s name is synonymous with sensory research, education, and treatment.

Dr. Miller has been investigating, analyzing, and explaining SPD to other scientists, professionals, and parents since she studied under sensory integration pioneer A. Jean Ayres, Ph.D., more than thirty years ago. Since then, studies by Dr. Miller and her colleagues have helped bring SPD widespread recognition, and her work with families has improved countless lives. Thanks specifically to Dr. Miller’s mobilization of the research community, SPD now appears in two diagnostic manuals: the ICDL’s Diagnostic Manual for Infancy and Early Childhood and The Diagnostic Classification: Zero to Three. Her application has led to consideration of SPD for inclusion in the 2013 revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V). Dr. Miller has also developed seven nationally standardized tests for use worldwide to assess and diagnose SPD and other developmental disorders and delays. Dr. Miller’s widespread recognition and enormous credibility within the professional community are part of the reason that advanced clinicians travel from all over the United States and other countries to be mentored by Dr. Miller and team at STAR Institute, which she founded three decades ago.

Lisa has been working with Dr. Miller since 2009 when she participated in Dr. Miller’s intensive mentorship program. She spent two summers at the STAR Institute in Colorado, where she was mentored by Dr. Miller and other STAR therapists. Dr. Miller has continued to mentor Lisa since that time

Lisa holds a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Rockhurst University, and a doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She is a faculty member of the STAR Institute for SPD in Denver, Colorado where she travels frequently to mentor experienced therapists. Lisa is a PhD candidate in Pediatric Science at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and specializes in parent training and sensory- and relationship-based therapy. She holds certifications in Sensory Integration, DIR/Floortime, and Yoga Calm, and has advanced training in the SOS Feeding Approach and Integrated Listening Systems

Candy, our parent facilitator, has volunteered with Sensory Kids since August of 2015, supporting families within our community. Along with her experience in teaching, she brings her knowledge of parenting a sensory kid and has successfully established many of the Hand in Hand Parenting techniques in her own household. She looks forward to sharing the connections you have in your own families.
